Fetters Mill Bridge is a historic steel riveted through truss, single lane bridge originally constructed in 1893 and rehabilitated in 1977. It is a 82-foot, single span structure , over the Pennypack Creek connecting Lower Moreland Township to the west, with Borough of Bryn Athyn to the east. The bridge was closed to traffic indefinitely on April 27, 2017 due to its poor condition. Based on the historical significance, PennDOT approved a full rehabilitation to accommodate a single lane of traffic through the historical Fetter’s Mill Village.
The short-term schedule involves the relocation of the PECO Gas main, followed by the installation of a Support of Excavation (SOE) system around existing bridge abutments for their removal and reconstruction. A crane access path will be created for the truss removal and offsite restoration. After forming and pouring new abutment footings, the bridge abutments and wing walls will be reconstructed. The truss will then be returned to the site, followed by roadway work and project completion. The area is prone to flooding during heavy rains, which could lead to project delays if construction activities are interrupted by post-storm cleanup.
