About Lower Moreland Township
Lower Moreland is a 340 year-old community adjacent to one of
the largest cities in the U.S. With award winning schools, quaint shops, historic districts, beautiful parks and access to 1,500 acres of preserved meadows, woodlands and miles of trails, Lower Moreland is one of the best small-town communities in America.
Lower Moreland Today
Lower Moreland is a First-Class Township under Pennsylvania Law and is home to a population of about 13,200 residents living in an area of 7 square miles. More than 20% of residents are foreign-born, adding to the rich cultural fabric of the community. Nearly 2,000 businesses call the community home as well. The Township is served by two SEPTA Regional Rail stations along with express train service to center city Philadelphia. Just minutes to all that a world-class city has to offer - but a world away from the hustle and bustle - makes Lower Moreland a great place to live and work.
Here's a link to information about the Township compiled by the United States Census Bureau.
Lower Moreland History
Lower Moreland Township is a part of what originally was a 10,000 acre land grant William Penn made to Nicholas Moore in 1682 at the founding of Pennsylvania. After Moore’s death in 1689, his children began to sell off pieces of what was then the “Manor of Moreland.” When Montgomery County was established in 1784, 2/3 of the Manor of Moreland became a part of the new county and shortly thereafter became “Moreland Township.” In 1916, Moreland Township again was divided, establishing the municipalities of Bryn Athyn, Upper Moreland and Lower Moreland.
